It is often said that a painting speaks thousand words and they are different to every viewer. The given painting is a wonderful example of agony and reality combined together. The painter has used specific colors which complement the theme and elaborate the meaning. Every stroke, tint, tone, shade and hue complements each other for conveying the appropriate meaning .
In the painting; one can see five lawyers in uniform. Their lips are not stretched in to a smile which speaks of self-satisfaction and inner peace. The facial expressions depict the bitter challenges a lawyer has to encounter in his life and career. The time table on the left side gives an impression of an extremely hectic work routine. Some TV shows can also be seen in the list but their duration as compared to the time spent in the court is really small. On the top right corner the painter has enlisted England’s hit makers with the timeline. Amalgamating the two sides, it can be comprehended that the lawyer struggles to make money with the help of media networking. This might be his source of earning because it is not possible to attend the training sessions in the court and take up a full time job. It seems that he researches a lot about these topics and gathers information.
The use of black, dark brown, white and beige color symbolizes the torment and sufferings of life. Black color is the most prominent and gives a mysterious morbid feeling to the viewer. It is often used as symbol of grief . The theme refers to challenges the painter perhaps is struggling with. The bunch of lawyers also gives an impression that they share the same struggles for their dream of a happy contented life. Their eyes are static. They do not have the shine which sparks. They look dejected and despondent. The overall impression of the painting is gloomy and Gothic and depicts a disconsolate life.
A part from the apparent characteristics, the painting also bears several abstract meanings. The phrase “The Rolling Stone”, which is probably the title of the painting, indicates a life which is directionless. It is rolling down without the clear visualization of a goal or objective. The bumpy path can change its course, people can kick it on its way, and several other factors can decide for its fate. The life of this lawyer can hence be perceived on the same lines.
The painting also refers to another subtle impression regarding the contemporary life. People in this century are too busy in making a career and a scope that they have almost no time for themselves. Money is the ultimate need and a key to survival. The sullen and peevish life lacks the true taste of living. The expressions and looks of the people compliment this fact and endorse it.
If one tries to summon up the overall impression which this painting generates, gloominess seems to be persistent in the distressing realities of life. There is a sharp difference between living and just existing. The bunch of lawyers presents the image of just existing instead of the living in its true meaning. Our needs often overwhelm our wishes and desires and suppress them somewhere. The given painting is the perfect example of such a situation and it beautifully contemplates the true nature of this so called advanced life.
