In 2012, the consumer privacy bill of rights was proposed by the White House, but Congress has yet to take action on it (Sengupta, 2013). Because of this inaction, the various states have come up with their own privacy laws, which provided protection to the privacy of various forms of data such as school data, license numbers, cellphone information, consumer information, and others. Every state also has a data breach notification law (Sengupta, 2013). In this regard, the affected industries have to make sure that they keep abreast of the changes in privacy laws so that they don’t intentionally or unintentionally violate them. For consumers, these laws would keep their personal and financial information protected. They don’t stand to lose anything from such legislation except perhaps the convenience of not having to fill up so many forms when conducting online transactions.
