A pro-slavery political argument was territorial, which permitted slavery in some territories. Slave owners had rights to move to the new territories occupied by the slaves.
The pro-slavery religious argument used biblical misinterpretation to subject people to slavery. It argued religious leaders in the owned slaves, and thus service from slaves was acceptable. He countered this by reading the Bible and realized that the Bible did not support the argument. "A single word from the white men was enough against all our wishes." (Douglass 90). The essence of different ideologies suggests the emphasis on the need for change in the pro-slavery era.Themes

Slavery

Douglass narrates about his life when he was a slave and the torture he underwent. He describes how women are raped and mistreated by white people. His father is a white master and does make him free.

Education

Douglass believes that everyone is equal to the other. He suggests that everyone was born to be free. Education is a tool to emancipate people from slavery. Slaves are not educated so that they are not united to fight the slavery.
The key passage in the narrative is the one when Douglass whispers that his master was his father. This passage is used to show the level of strictness the slavery had to masters in such a way they could not do what was right for them (Douglass 91). The most important thing to share education is tool to emancipate people from slavery and mistreat other people. If Douglass did not obtain information that made him alert, he could spend his life as a slave. Illiteracy hindered people from rebelling against the slavery because they could not communicate. Ideally, information gave Douglass the power to stand his ground effectively.
