The upper body is an integral part of human communication. Human beings perform tasks by coordinating the lower body and the upper body for efficiency and support. In the course of this coordination, it may be easy to predict the actions of the individual by examining the movement of their power body. However, people can perform certain tasks effectively by exposing their upper body alone. It elicits certain responses, which are not witnessed when the person performs the task using the whole body. The upper body is effective in the performance of some specific tasks. Effective communication can take place in cases where the upper body is the only visible part.
Embodied Social Proxy: Mediating Interpersonal Connection in Hub-and-Satellite Teams
In the modern business world, organizational teams work from various locations. Since they are unable to enjoy physical contact, it may lead to delays in the delivering the tasks allocated by the organization. The development of the hub-and-satellite technology helps to resolve this problem by enabling telepresence using the Embodied Social Proxy (ESP). It enables contact with the co-worker through the satellite. ESP provides an opportunity for cost reduction as they can conduct meetings and sessions virtually without the necessity to pay transport costs.
In-group/Out-group Effects in Distributed Teams: An Experimental Simulation
Today’s workplaces often facilitate collocation of members through virtual contact. It helps to shorten the response time required by staff to give feedback by eliminating the need to meet in person. They enable the formation of virtual teams that work in the same manner as long as they are connected to the same objectives set by the organization. As the colocation takes effect, people tend to understand each other’s mannerisms and peculiar skills that can add value to the organization.
The articles are connected through their views on the social relations people have. They show that physical contact is not necessary for people to have effective communication. Communication is possible when some parts of the body are visible or using technological devices.
