Divine Roles across Culture

Many cultures feature strong female divinities. It is ironic that so many cultures recognized the strength of females and their important role in their societies. Women in mythology throughout the world were equal to their male counterparts. This demonstrates that most ancient cultures understood the importance women in their society. In many cultures the divinity of wisdom, literature or art is female. In addition to Athena and Saraswati, Norse mythology has Vor and the Egyptians had Isis.
Wisdom and the expression of thought have been important to humankind since they began drawing on cave walls. This led to cultures developing complex mythologies to explain the world around them and assign specific gods and goddesses to individual traits they deemed important in their culture. Traits such as writing, thought, and art in any form became very important in ancient civilizations as they began to form and define themselves.
In modern times, we still recognize the contributions and roles of these goddesses throughout history. They are portrayed as strong and able and represent aspects of culture that are highly valued. Their stories and the lessons associated with them have shaped cultures and attitudes for thousands of years.
