Women in the recent years have emerged from being the supporting casts of many daytime shows and films to take up the stories as dominant characters. They have become integral in breathing life into stories and plots of daytime shows by being used to challenge the social norms held about the female gender. Many of the daytime dramas have been based on the female narrative. The plotlines of the drama show not only prize women as key figures but also as sources of history as they age which continuously keeps the audience entertained. A good example of a daytime show that clearly encompasses this concept is The Bold and The Beautiful.
The Bold and The Beautiful narrates the story of the Forrester family and their investment in the fashion industry. With a host of talented female actors, the show is greatly woven in their stories. One character is Brooke Logan, who falls in love with Ridge Forester. The relationship defies the class-odds since Ridge hails from a wealthy background as compared to Brooke Logan who is from a working-class family. The relationship highlights the feminine cultural codes by showing Brooke as the typical woman who is subordinate to her male lover Ridge. In the course of Ridge’s pursuit for her affections, she is depicted as defenseless and vulnerable.
Another character significantly featured in the show is Stephanie Forrester. Stephanie’s age is not deterrence in the plot as her past relationships and her hand in her sons’ relationships unfolds much drama. At one time, Stephanie is shown to be involved in an affair with a younger man. This in the contemporary context would be frowned upon but her character manages to breathe life into this controversial defiance of female gender code of submission.
