The female characters in many daytime shows have emerged as central figures of the plotlines. This has been made possible in their depiction as defiant or in harmony with female cultural codes assigned to them by the society. Their roles particularly based on relationships have been used to show the social construct of the society regarding the feminity as well as the struggles they face as they seek to defy odds to achieve satisfaction and happiness. The Bold and The Beautiful, an American daytime Show has many central female figures that have managed to help the show grow and acquire much viewership.
Brooke Logan is one of the central female figures in the show that is used to illustrate female gender codes. Her story is mainly based on her and off relationship with Ridge Forrester. The two are seen to defy the odds due to their background disparities i.e. rich versus poor. Brooke manages to portray the submissive female that easily falls for the charms of Ridge. She also depicts subordination, a female cultural code, in her engagement with men on the daytime show. She gives up her career upon her lover’s request in order to be with him.
The other centric female character in the show is Sally Spectra, who is used to posit the notion that women can defy cultural codes. She is illustrated as an abrasive and competitive woman who considers men her equals. She is also involved with a younger man, Clark Garrison, whom she marries despite opposition from her immediate family. The character manages to show that women can rise from their traditional roles such as being homemakers and the submissive wife. This is significantly shown by her treatment of her younger husband, Clark. He is perceived to come seconding their relationship.
