ARP 273

Thinking about the universe is mesmerizing, majestic and even infinite. Thanks to the study of astronomy, life on Earth, as we know it, has a very advanced view of the historical treasures in the sky. On April 24, 1990, NASA launched the Hubble Telescope on the Discovery shuttle and since then the Hubble Telescope has captured majestic images throughout the universe. “Hubble discoveries revolutionized nearly all areas of current astronomical research from planetary science to cosmology” . The universe is vast with billions of stars and billions of galaxies. On the 21st Anniversary of the Hubble Telescope, astronomers celebrated with a newly discovered image taken by the Hubble called the ARP 273. The image displays two galaxies interacting together with astronomical force and the combination of the two creates a majestic swirl in the shape of a rose as seen in this image below . This photo is imaged using three ultraviolet filters and the result is outstanding. The two colliding galaxies form a luxurious swirl shape of a rose that sparkles with the bursting light of the stars.
ARP 273 is found in the constellation Andromeda. The galaxy is roughly 340 million light years away from Earth. The width of this rose shaped swirled galaxy is 260,000 light years from one end to the other. The two interacting galaxies are separated by tens of thousands light years. The galaxy is made up of many hot, young blue stars that burn fierce and bright. Though, it is not uncommon for two or more galaxies to intertwine; the precise reason as to why the two galaxies are gravitationally pulling along each other is unknown at this time.
“Within a billion years for a galaxy’s formation, key structures begin to appear” . There is no exact age of this galaxy but it is safe to assume that it is over a billion years old as it takes around a billion years for a galaxy to form. Galaxies are a system bonded with gravity that bestow; stars, dust, dark matter, stellar remnants, interstellar gas and gas. With the study of science, prediction can be that this galaxy will last another few billion years. The oldest known star in our very own galaxy is at least 13 billion years old. So the possibilities are pretty much vast as to how old ARP 237 is.
Studies show that these two galaxies and many others have also, collided by passing through space and with their radiation and gravitational pull the galaxy that is passing through ends up getting “caught” in the middle of all the radiation and gravitation. And it could stay there from billions of years. “A series of uncommon spiral patterns in the large galaxy is a tell-tale sign of interaction. The large, outer arm appears partially as a ring, a feature seen when interacting galaxies actually pass through one another. This suggests that the smaller companion actually dived deep, but off-center, through UGC 1810. The inner set of spiral arms is highly warped out of the plane, with one of the arms going behind the bulge and coming back out the other side” . This is a story of interacting galaxies and how radiation, gravity and dark matter has made such a cosmic event occur.
Earth’s home galaxy is the Milky Way and our solar system includes eight planets; excluding the recently voted off planet, Pluto, which is now classified as a minor planet. We know for a fact that there is life on at least one planet with that of planet Earth. So knowing that ARP 237 is not just one but two galaxies, we can most likely assume that there are planets in the midst of its dust particulars and dark matter. “There are likely "tens of billions" of Earth-like planets in our Milky Way galaxy, according to a study released Monday by astronomers from the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Hawaii” . Who is to assume that there is no life within any galaxy? There can very well possibly be life on some planet orbiting around this beautiful and romantic galaxy cluster of two. Humans do not have confirmed evidence that there is life on other planets but there is much speculation as to that with uncovered documentaries streaming in the media of strictly confidential government restrictions on allowing the public in on accurate information regarding unidentified flying objects and alien encounters.
This collision of galaxies is beyond beautiful. Galaxies come in many shapes and sizes but this one is of a glowing garden full of shimmering stars. It’s romantic in a sense that these two galaxies have collided and it very well could be love. If there is life in this galaxy, how amazing and fun is it to imagine the type of life that is there. Is it full of waterfalls and nature with a plethora of beautiful creatures and beings? Who knows the answers but the imagination can explore an endless amount of possibilities just like the universe can exhibit billions of galaxies and stars.
The universe is beyond massive and it contains billions of celestial showcases, some we can observe right from our own backyard and others can be viewed from highly advance space technology such as the Hubble Telescope. The Hubble has provided researchers and the public with astonishing images that inspire many regarding the marvels in space. The rose of galaxies is particularly beautiful in its own form and shape, telling a story of galaxies colliding, interacting and spiraling through one another with the possibility of life inside somewhere through the thousands of light years wide. There is much to be said about the beauty and much to be discovered in just observing the photo captured by the Hubble Telescope. Overall we have proof of how our universe is practically endless with cosmic treasures. It is important to support space exploration, space science, physics and astronomy. It is their hard work, bravery and brains that has taken society to a place where it can marvel at the night sky.
