Here is something you probably have no idea about, but it exists in our daily life as a society. The following is an analysis of the relationship that exists between rhetorical conventions and culture. There exists a relationship between culture of individuals and rhetorical conventions. It is true that people write and interpret messages in line with their culture. The different cultural backgrounds can explain the difference that people are brought. Some people from some cultures find it rude to put a straight no as an answer while others find saying no as a direct forward and courteous way of giving information. Similarly, some African cultures equate intelligence with imagination and others dullness with matter-of-factness. A quote from the article clearly asserts this proposition, “Certain African cultures equate dullness with matter-of-factness and intelligence with imagination”. (Boiarsky 252)
The relationship between culture and genre of writing is enormous. People address and write letters the way they are used to. On the other hand, people reply to letters in conformity with their culture. It is evident from the two letters that when letters are written in the format that the culture of the readers dictates, the addressed get to understand the letters and get replies. The rationale is that people will in most times understand the format that they use mostly. This can be seen in the corresponding letters of the Japanese and the Chinese. The Chinese letter appears to be more informal by stating “I hope you have a safe journey home and that you have found your family in good health.” (Boiarsky 249) The Japanese letter does not present such formality towards its readers.
The expectations for communication in communities discussed in the article are a pre-requisite. For example, people react to a message in correspondence with the writers’ personality and tone as deduced from the letter. There are different interpretations of similar words in different cultures, and this brings numerous discrepancies in regards to message reception. It can, therefore, be said that it is true that different cultures interpret messages differently.
Communication that cuts across cultures should accommodate cultural differences. As a college student, I have learnt to appreciate the fact that different individuals have different perceptions to messages. From the article, a letter written in conformity with the culture of the recipient got replies as it was in line with the culture of the community.
