Marriage

Polygamy, according to Islamic law, is permitted for a man up to four wives. This can be done legally and a husband does not even have to consult with his wife or wives. In case a man is married to one wife who is unable to conceive, he is allowed to take a second wife, as long as he is able and ready to take care of her. One of the blessings that come with marriage is children and a man, who is not able to have children with his first wife, can reasonably marry for the second time. Islamic law will only prohibit such a man if the intentions of getting a second wife are not valid. A man is supposed to prove and attest to the fact that he will be able to love all his wives without showing favor to one. Marrying a second wife will not mean that the first one be neglected or even sidelined in matters that pertain to the family. As one gets any other wife, it has to be done in the right way to ensure that there will be no future conflicts between him and the wives. Wisdom has to be applied in all issues that pertain to marriage.

Divorce

Before getting a wife or wives, a Muslim man needs to be mature and ready to handle issues pertaining to marriage. Similarly, a woman needs to have a good understanding of what marriage pertains and hence being ready to submit to her husband at all times. As much as divorce is allowed in the Islamic law, it is an abomination that has to be avoided at all times. This is because of the implications of divorce and the psychological turmoil it is likely to cause to the divorced couple and their children. Divorce in Islamic law cannot be reversed and therefore the decision has to be made in soberness and after considering a number of factors. A divorce, according to Islamic law is facilitated verbally by the pronunciation of the word ‘talak’ three times. Irrespective of whether the words were pronounced out of anger or soberly; a couple is considered divorced thereafter. A man is always allowed to marry another wife after divorcing the first one or even before. The maximum number of wives that a Muslim man is supposed to have is four as long as he is able and capable of taking care of them.

Alcohol

Consumption of alcohol, whether in small or large quantities, is prohibited in Islamic law. A person is not allowed to consume alcohol in any circumstance or situation. This hence implies that a person has to defend his or her religious beliefs wherever he is. By mention that he or she is a Muslim, he or she needs to be given the respect deserved by not being served alcohol. A Muslim is prohibited from engaging in acts that are contrary to their religious teachings, just to please a particular group or to feel part of them. In as much as Muslims are allowed to interact with people from different cultures and backgrounds, they are not allowed to engage in their beliefs, especially if they are contrary to Islamic teachings. Apart from religious beliefs that prohibit Muslims from consuming alcohol, alcohol is detested because of the health implications they have on an individual. Alcohol destabilizes the mind and causes a person to engage in things that they would not have engaged in, if they were sober. There are also other long-term health implications that are likely to cause unexpected deaths.
