In light of President Obama’s recent announcement that he would like to make education at two-year community colleges tuition free, there has been some discussion in Canada about pursuing the same policy. There are many people that agree with Mr. Obama in Canada, as they would like to see their educational system in line to what Germany possesses, as that nation offers free education. These advocates feel every student should be afforded the opportunity for an education and a highly educated population is a benefit for all. Unfortunately, however, the concept is not quite so simple to implement and in all honesty, Canada should most definitely not offer free tuition. This paper will explore only several of the reasons why free tuition in Canada should not even be an option.
First and foremost, the burden of paying for this will fall on the tax payers. Education is already a pricey thing for them and if education is going to be paid for why not put that money towards programs for young children whose parents have a low income? Those funds could definitely be allocated to other areas where they would have a more positive impact. In addition, would it water down the educational product? In Germany, the students’ scores are rather low and the professors are paid much less than in Canada. Would high quality professors want to work for a lower wage? And would the curriculum be up to elite standards? There are too many what if’s and not enough concrete substantiation to institute free tuition in Canada after high school. Also, what it comes down to is money and the tax payers simply should not have to pay for a free education for all students. A post-secondary education is an investment and not an absolute right.
