I am in total agreement with you that a standard operating procedure (SOP) is not only a requirement but an essential component of a business environment. I could not agree with you more that the SOP serves as a framework with which employees make decisions. However, you indicate that there may be exceptions to the SOP; I am curious, which are some of this exceptions? With regards to a logistic company providing intermodal freight services, I agree with the components that you would include in the SOP. I would go on and list them below:

Planning,

Documentation,
Follow through and follow up and
Sending appropriate information to the customer
I strongly believe that you have mentioned everything that should be included in the SOP, which is impressive. I like the fact that you singled out documentation and included it as a component on its own although documents are included in the planning process It is true that “without the correct documentation, cargo would not be able to move” as you have stated. From planning, documentation, monitoring and feeding information with the appropriate information, you have basically touched on all aspects and I agree with you.

You state that “having an SOP is important towards the efficiency and order of a company,” to which I agree with you. Further, you explain state that a lot of planning and strategy is comes to play with regards to a logistic company providing intermodal freight services. I find your steps in creating the SOP rather intriguing. I admire the fact that you would begin creating an SOP by first defining and explaining the goal of the business. Employees need to know what the goals of the logistic company are before commencing work. Secondly you would define the expectations and thirdly assign tasks. However, your last step misses an important aspect. You indicate that the employee would make sure all the orders are done as per the plan when the shipment is done. Some key documents have to be provided to the customer way before the shipment is done, such as tracking information. This would keep the customer in the know and would enhance customer service. You end by stating planning and organization makes the process of shipping efficient. I totally agree.
