The film Generation Jobless illustrates the kind of problems and the joblessness faced by the Canadian youths. It illustrates the causes, impacts and the outcomes of joblessness amongst these youths. The students being well educated and have attained university education, the unemployment rates of these youths are still very high. These factors are categorised in three area that includes the business, government and the educational sectors. All these branches have a great impact on the unemployment of the youth. Canada is the only country in the world that do not have a national ministry dealing with education. This reason the government does not have a good labour study in knowing the number of graduates in the specific areas of study.
Most youths go to school up to the university level, attain very lucrative degrees in various field, but still end up unemployed or underemployed. Most of the youths in Canada work in areas that are not under their professions because there are no jobs in their areas of specialisation. According to the film, most of them have their dreams of getting good jobs; good houses and good families have their dreams shattered immediately after finishing their university education. They do not have work experience which most of the companies put into consideration. At the same time, they have to compete with their parents who have vast experience in these jobs.
For this reason, the youths opt to go for further studies to increase their chances of getting jobs. It's in the end does not help because they get all these qualifications without any experience. Some end up looking for an internship in different companies though some are not paid, and they have to work for free just in the name of attaining some experience though they are not guaranteed these jobs. Most of the companies also prefer using the available technologies in doing some of the work that could be done by people. An example is given of the use of robots in dispensing drugs hence replacing pharmacists; also, lawyers are replaced by software that can analyse data. Companies, for this reason, take advantage of the youths either to give them less money or to let them work free.
The government has failed the Canadian youth since they do not have the correct labour study in knowing the number of graduates in specific areas of study and the number needed by the government. In Switzerland, the government have the records of the number of graduates in every field and the employers have the responsibility of training the youths in specific areas of interests. However, this is completely different from Switzerland where the students are trained in their areas of preference from the young age of 15. In Switzerland, the system of education is also very favourable since there are two systems and the entry to university is restricted to 20% making their unemployment rate to be the lowest in the world at 2.8%. It's only one university in Canada, Regina University, that guarantees their students’ job after they graduate. When they fail to secure jobs after six months, they are allowed to come back to study in the university and trained to get the experience. It’s only the technology courses that are considered to be better considered in the job market and teaching the lowest considered with 67% unemployed teachers.
In general, the Canadian government should change their system of education and have their students learn best through doing but not through sitting in class. This is the system used by Switzerland in making sure that most of their youths get employment at the same time, they get to know their career choices very early.
