The short film, Luminaris, by Juan Pablo Zaramella, is an enchanting film that impresses one and all with its sheer essence. The film is shot beautifully, and there is extensive use of special effects. The film’s content and portraiture makes one spellbound as the filmmaker has used the short span of time of the film to bring out one of the most novel ideas.
The film starts with a person being dragged out of bed by some unseen force. The protagonist then gets ready, and moves out of his house. As he proceeds along the road, it becomes clear that all these activities are a part of the system in which the person is bound in. The person finally reaches the place where he works. There he is found working in a cubicle making bulbs in a fantastical way taking the assistance of another worker. Then the film shows that this activity is simply a microcosm as there are so many other cubicles doing the same work. This is signifying the mode of production in the present day society that utilizes the workers as mere instruments to carry out the work in the industries across the world.
Thus, the workers are left with the shackles of monotonous work every day that robs them of their individuality and innovativeness. Thus, the capitalist mode of production gives work to many who toil day in and day out to increase the production. These bulbs that are being made would be sold among the masses. However, the protagonist of the film is found to steal the circular balls that are used to make the bulbs. The audience understands that this man has got something going on in his mind.
The film also portrays the scathing eye of the employer in the form of a bulky man who shows up to scrutinize the process of work. The protagonist escapes the eye of the employer who is signifier of the uncompromising bourgeoisie of the society.
The man returns to his home, and keeps the balls in a jar. The audience comes to know that he is planning something innovative that he has chalked out in a piece of paper. He keeps all the glass balls inside a jar. The next day is nothing different in the beginning. He goes to the workplace, and starts making the bulbs. Only this day, while he is in the process of stealing the glass balls, he is caught by the employer. He is thrown out of the workplace on charges of theft. This incident also shows how the capitalist class takes ownership of the resources that are need to do some innovative work.
The protagonist returns to his home feeling sad as he is unable to collect enough resource to carry out his innovative experiment. He leaves the piece of paper where he made the calculations in the middle of the road. His work is thwarted as he does not have the required resource to complete his work.
At this juncture, there is a knock at the door. A lady shows up with the piece of paper with the calculation, and she offers the protagonist the required resource. Thus, the man is able to carry out the experiment. He is successful in making a huge bulb that has enough power to light up the entire city. The bulb travels upwards in the sky carrying the lady and the inventor.
A simple worker of a bulb factory thus becomes an inventor. The people of the city bask in the awe of seeing this bulb that provides them light. They peep out of their windows being flabbergasted at the invention. The employer is also found to peep out of the window of his house in frustration.
The film is inspirational as it explores the creative zeal that is there inside many people. These people just require thinking out-of-the-box, and not give in to the monotony and shackles of the capitalist societal structure. Thus, the film explores the hidden ability of human nature.
