Marriage has changed in various ways for the last fifty years. The number of people marrying has reduced significantly. More people are delaying getting married and the rates of divorce have increased tremendously. In this case, therefore, more single parents where parent just concentrate in bringing up children while living separately has increased. Cohabitation without formal marriage has increased and the legal definition of marriage having changed too
The wedding complex refers to the weeding industry. The nature of wedding have changed over time with it becoming more of business that simply rituals. Wedding has become part of the major economic players in USA with a line of products and services dedicated for making weddings a success. The complex helps couples in coming up with wedding plans and executing them.
Marriage involves a lot of money right from planning. In this case, those with lower income cannot manage to plan and carry out weddings. In addition, the prevailing economic challenges also act as barriers to the low income people.
The Blacks have historically been economically sidelined since slavery times. With no means of production, they ended up been poor and with no land or houses. Such has contributed to fewer Blacks marrying.
Becker claims that marriage simply means staying in one household which is not true. Marriage cannot be quantified based on the variable used in the theory. There is more than the utility between two people in marriage. Marriage has also changed meaning from male and female to included two adults of any sex.
Marriage usually occurred in diverse cultural setting, economic backgrounds, and different people interpreted differently how wealth matters to them. In this case, a researcher might be faced to strictly choses from the top, middle, and the lowest of the social economic status. However, there been no clear boundaries in the same, the results would end up been distorted.
Couples decide to cohabit depending on their social economic status and abilities and beliefs. Those who are economically stable tend to want to marry while those not cohabit.
A married person has higher need that a single person in terms of providing for the children, securing a home for the family, among other basic needs. Due to the increased needs brought by the partners, or children, then a married person would need a higher salary than the single.
