Politics and government: Lobbying, as presented in "The Best Government Money, Can Buy."

Lobbying is the act of the rich using the money they have to get what they want, especially from the poor. It is the quite important to the government since it forms the basis of forming the key decisions that all our lives if not most. From the movie entitles “The Best Government Money Can Buy” a lot of stories have been told of the act of lobbying, especially by the United States’ Government. Francis Megahy, a filmmaker, in his documentary, asks who run the US government. In the United States, statistics shows that the number of the lobbyists outnumber the senators by a greater ratio (Forster, 72). They spend approximately 7 billion US dollars annually as per 2009. The movie has elaborately managed to tell the US public the untold story of lobbying as practiced by the government itself. Although it sounds like a lot of money, the lobbying efforts are quite substantial.
As portrayed in the movie, lobbyists tend to cover themselves in the shadow and protection of the first amendment of the constitution regarding petition for the government’s redress for the grievances. Although the average return of lobbying is quite low, most of the lobbyist wouldn’t reconsider this since they are out to protect their interests. In politics, the politician is presented with a personal issue, probably from an individual. Therefore, the politician is obliged to act by either defeating the unfavorable legislation or enacting a given legislation in favor of that person who will in the long run pay him a huge amount of money or rewarding him/her with a better campaign deal. In the end, the politician would have been lobbied with lucrative favours to serve the person’s interests.
In US, lobbying is an act that has been adopted by even multimillion organizations that are out to protect their businesses and interests. The very notion that the politicians are not lobbyists is a ludicrous mentality that should be wiped out of our thinking since these guys do this from day to day.
