Southwest Airlines’ strategies seem to be effective as they remain as one of the most competitive airline companies today. The two strategies that are using such as the low-cost strategy provides more appeal to their customers. That is because; passenger will be able to experience a business-level travel without paying too much on their air fare. As a result, Southwest Airline Company has the potential to gain more passengers because of this first strategy. In addition, the other strategy that the company is using will also attract more passengers, customers who see family-like culture as an important part of the overall service of the company. In fact, the upper management’s family-like treatment will motivate their employees to work harder. That could be one of the greatest assets that a company can do to their employees. In combining these two strategies, Southwest will surely remain as competitive as it is today and will attract more passengers in the future.

It is true that with Southwest’s strategies, the company is stuck in the middle. The management has to ensure that their low-cost strategy will remain effective, while ensuring that their differentiation strategy will not compromise the overall profit of the company. In a sense, being different means more costs for Southwest. However, what the company is doing is that they are using this differentiation strategy in order to attract more passengers, in addition to their low-cost offer. For example, the provision of Wi-Fi access to their passengers on board while flying is something that makes them distinct from the other airline companies. With this simple free “add-on”, passengers will be more satisfied as they are getting this benefit without having to go over their air fare budget. Southwest was able to combine these strategies in order to provide satisfaction not only to their customers, but to their employees as well by giving them more than a fair treatment. As a result, satisfied employees will be able to provide satisfactory service to their customers.
