Introduction

Common core standards represent education standards that students need to know. According to Zimba (2014), Common Core Standards were adopted to increase and foster college and career readiness and to set a global competitive standard in education. Development of these standards began in 2007 at a State Schools Officers meeting where there was a need to develop common standards at the state level (Zimba, 2014). In 2009, development of the standards began, and a public draft was made available in 2010. Zimba (2014) notes that the standards have led to the increasing importance of arithmetic in elementary math curriculum, which is consistent with high-performing countries like Singapore. Common Core Standards seek to streamline education standards in a global competitive environment.

Reasons supporting Common Core Standards

Critical importance of the Common Core standard is that it presents a more precise performance and excellence in the math’s curriculum. The standards foster understanding of the concepts, perfection and grasping of procedures, and application of math’s in solving and addressing problems (Zimba, 2014). Students who can understand concepts in their training can be able to think mathematically and hence solve problems easily.
Common core standards look to train students to become better for college (Zimba 2014). This is by increasing the thoroughness in the classroom and engagement of the students in the learning process. This provides one of the major reasons for the development of the Common Core Standards. Most colleges have indicated based on the previous education standards that students have required additional learning prior to joining colleges. With the common core standards, students become more equipped for the life after high school.
The Common Care Standards seek to establish a standardized test score nationwide. This makes it possible for different states to compare results and performance with other states. Such a move can help educationists strategize ways to improve education in states that are performing poorly. Previous standards have made it difficult to compare results.
The fact that Common Core standards seek to attain international standards provides more reason for its application. Countries that are high-performing such as Singapore have been seen to utilize standards that have played a critical role in their countries development (Zimba 2014).

Reasons against the Common Core

Common core standards will face difficulty in terms of transitioning. Many teachers and students have been oriented to a traditional way of teaching and learning. Learning new concepts will require dedication of teachers to unlearn and learn new concepts. As such, the success of implementation will be dependent on the willingness of the teachers and students to learn the new standards.
Introduction of Common Core standards may derail the progress already made by the existing standards of learning. According to Knowledge Quest (2014), a state such as Virginia has made efforts to increase accountability in the application of the standards of learning. As such abandoning the Standards of Learning to implement the new standards, may not serve the interest of the Virginia students by interrupting progress already made.

Conclusion.

It is critical to evaluate how the common core standards will affect education from a social perspective. Family is a foundation for education, and if the common core standards are not clearly synced with the family, the implementation may fail (Toscano, 2013). Addressing some of the problems of common core standards early enough may prove to better its implementation. Despite the fact that it may cause disruption initially, the bigger picture is that it will improve the quality of education and generate students competitng at a global level.
