The corruption perceptions index provides a measurement on the level of corruption in different countries and territories. It specifically, highlights the level of corruption in the public sector of different nations. The ranking is based on a scale of between 0 and 100 where a 0 index means the country is highly corrupt while a 100 score means the country is very clean and exhibits lowest levels of corruptions. The index is generated surveys conducted by various institutions such as the World Bank, Global Insight and the African Development Bank (Transparency Organization). The corruption Perception Index relies on perception as a measure of corruption intensity since it is hard to get factual data on corruption levels.
Based on the index results of 2014, the following five countries recorded lowest corruption perception levels; Denmark, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden and Norway while these five recorded the highest corruption perception levels Somalia, North Korea, Sudan, Afghanistan, and South Sudan (Transparency Organization). It is clear countries that were ranked lowest in corruption levels share the same features. For instance, all the five least corrupt nations have strong economies and their citizens are proud of their public sector. Their governments are stable and they have good infrastructures. Besides that, there is equity in public resource distribution.
However, the five highly corrupt nations are having poor economies and their nations some level of political instability. Citizens in these countries are not satisfied with the performance of the public sector. Moreover, these nations do not have a good infrastructure and there are widespread inequalities. Specifically, there are widespread levels of inequalities. Specifically, large sections of the people are poor while small populations enjoy massive wealth.
It is thus clear that corruption affects the growth of many nations. It brings economic and social problems to many countries. Countries that do not have high corruption levels gain economic and social growth (Kenny, p.15).
