Laura Bullion, popularly known as Della Rose, was an outlawed female from the west. Interesting to note, is that there were claims that she was born in Germany (Rutter, 19-74). Additionally, other claims indicate that she was a native from Knickerbockers in Iron County, Texas. Presently, her exact date of birth is still unclear. In the 1890’s she joined an outlawed group named Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch. Obnoxiously, the father of Laura was also an outlawed citizen. The father in collaboration with acquaintances engaged in the series of robberies. Laura was involved in the Great Northern Train Robbery that eventually landed her in prison.
Laura Bullion was a treacherous individual who mastered the art of tricks for survival. In line with the above-mentioned trait, she successfully played men without their knowledge. Laura had an affair with different men in the gang. The primary reason for engaging in the said affair was to enable Laura to keep men closer. Despite, Laura expressing interest in joining the outlawed group, her boyfriend was unhappy with the idea. The unwillingness of her boyfriend made Laura uncomfortable as she wanted to be part of the gang by all means.
Laura resolved to have an affair with a number of men within the illegal group. The mentioned resolution was to earn men’s trust (Rutter, pp 23-86). The discussed character was also involved in other forms of trickeries such as forgery. Evidently, she was accused of forging signatures to obtain funds. Report further indicates that Laura had fogged a number of signatures and got over 8,000 dollars. Despite Laura operating in the group’s activities, she engaged in other parallel trickster act.
Whenever Laura changed location of stay while running away from law enforcers, she employed deceitful act of changing names so as to hide her identity (Rutter, pp 14-56). At some point, she presented herself as a war widow and even went further to reduce her age by ten years with an aim of presenting herself younger. Laughably, Laura dressed like a young boy to avoid being detected and arrested by the police. The said trick did not work as expected, she ended up being arrested.
Compared to Dolores in the story of the pirate women, there are a number of similarities between the women (Sharp, pp 12-56). First, both women were members of a male dominated gang that operated with a lot of lethal force. In the case of Laura, she was not the leader of the group but tried to fit in the gang. On the other hand, Dolores was the head of the group after her father. Similarly, both women employed treacherous traits to achieve their personal goals with Dolores planning to run away with all the treasures without the knowledge of other pirate members.
In conclusion, we have heard more about male outlaws than the female outlaws due to societal inclinations. The perception of the society about women is that they are subordinate to men. The above means, even if the women engage in criminal activities, they will still be second in command. To be specific, the society view women as subordinate to men. In view of the above, the focus usually shifts to the man with little attention channeled to women. The said reason, clearly explains the society has more male outlaws as compared to female outlaws.
