Airports are influential and critical elements that influence urban and economic growth, especially on the global front. Airports, as components of infrastructure, are unique when compared to other forms of transportation. As such, airports allow the global and regional connection, which has greatly influenced economic and urban growth in various countries. The connection between economic growth and airports yields significant facets that propel the growth (In Hartmann et al, 2014). They include agglomerate economics, transportation, and public finance. Economic growth often relates to infrastructural development. As such, it implies that airports typically fuel the growth of the economies of the adjacent localities.
Transportation influences the growth of metropolises, with air transport playing a crucial role in the long and short distance travels. Businesses heavily rely on the capability of transporting supplies. Thus, air travel facilitates business interactions between various urban centres, which translate in their growth. Similarly, urban centres are always affected by congestion and increase in oil pricing. Air travel and airports solve such issues by offering alternative means of transportation, which are unaffected by congestion (Yigitcanlar, 2010).
Urban growth also depends on the interaction between cities and other developed nations. Airports provide an avenue by which such cities connect with the outside developed world. Similarly, businesspersons in advanced countries may only travel to cities with recognized airports. Major cities in the world have grown due to the presence of airports. They are terminals that improve accessibility to input supplies for various industries. Airports also generate revenue for funding of development projects in the cities (Yigitcanlar, 2010). The effects of airports on urban growth may not seem direct. Regardless, they catalyse urban and economic growth by facilitating connectivity among the various facets of development.
