Example Of Report On Service Learning Report
I love to volunteer because nothing gives me greater happiness and satisfaction than the feeling to have been of use to a community. Perhaps, the essential trait to help fellow human beings is the foundation of humanity that every human being shares in lesser or greater measure. Perhaps my cultural and ethnic background has a lot to do with the way I feel about participating in programs designed to be of value to communities.
I am a Muslim from Saudi Arabia. My religion and culture teaches me to be of use to fellow human beings. My parents have taught us to help others, especially old people. However, I follow these teachings not because they are command or request but because I feel happy when I devote selflessly to the needs of others. In addition, volunteering in a new culture is a novel experience for me that I enjoy and would love to do again and again.
I feel extremely happy with a huge sense of inner satisfaction to inform that I have volunteered at two places. I have had wonderful experience volunteering at these two places. I will briefly describe my experiences there.
The first place I volunteered is Neighbor to Neighbor Community Service. It is located in Berrien Springs, MI.The volunteering service here is a living example of how interaction with communities can not only be mutually beneficial but is also a great example in recycling, optimization of resources and environmental cleanliness. This community receives several items of consumption from volunteers or other people who don’t need them. These items typically include TVs, clothes, games, pictures, and almost every other item of consumption that others can use. Offering few hours of my service in this community brings me inner happiness.
I wonder why some people take volunteering as some form of compulsory burden imposed upon them. I helped people in this community with typical chores such as vacuuming the place, hanging picture on the wall, folding the cars, taping the Christmas tree’s light inside the box and write on it, ensuring that it worked well. I also helped with moving stuff from in place to storage.
The second place I volunteered at is the dorm of the university. I live in the students housing at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, MI. There are lots of things to do at the dorm of the university in keeping the place neat, clean and hygienic. No one needs to tell anyone that they ought to do this or that job. I volunteer out of my own sweet will because I feel a huge sense of inner satisfaction when I see the clean windows.
I have always felt an inner urge to volunteer. However, when a person is located in a new culture, they encounter inner resistance for they do not understand how others will perceive their action. In the beginning of the volunteering experience, I too felt this inner hesitation. It was like, whether I was doing the things the right way, whether or not my action would be appreciated. However, gradually as I internalized the new culture, I gained confidence.
I began to actively participate in the tasks related to volunteering. I could see the happiness in the eyes of others, who saw me doing these tasks. Volunteering is not an activity that one performs in isolation like meditation, for instance. Here you are involved in a community setting and therefore you feel connected to the community. At times, I would feel the sense of disappointment, when I noticed that there are people who are little bothered about volunteering. They need to understand that they are a part of a community and intimately connected. I have wanted to share my feelings about wonderful experience. I am happy that I got an opportunity to share my inner feelings.
