The Symphony of the Soil
The film Symphony of the Soil, in general, extols both significance and mystery of the soil using a more artistic medium. The soil, as depicted in the film, is considered as one of Earth’s most precious treasures by using statement from renowned scientists, farmers and activists. The stunning film shows how huge of an impact the soil is to the future and survival of humankind. Taking some notes from environmental activists, the future of humanity depends on how people care to the natural resources. The big picture that the film is attempting to highlight is that today’s practice of chemical agriculture is actually destroying the planet’s soil at a very alarming pace. It destroys the soil that took hundred (or more) years to develop. The agriculture industry based on genetically engineering food and using chemicals is destroying the soil, which in the eyes of all the people who participated in the film is considered a breathing and living ecosystem.
The soil has its own life cycle, but due to the chemicals being used today, they accelerate the aging of soil which in return hinders its ability to produce quality products and affects its contribution in the ecosystem. For example, one of the important role the soil plays is in the Nitrogen cycle. Nitrogen is extremely important to plants. Soil bacteria contribute to the transformation of atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants can utilize. However, due to the use of artificial fertilizers by most farmers nowadays, soil bacteria are slowly being removed from the formation of nitrogen. Artificial fertilizers are used to increase the biomass of soil in order for farmers to yield more crops. Also affected on the intervention of chemical fertilizers is the role phosphorus due to the decrease of microorganisms in soil. When natural fertilizers are used, more microorganisms function in the soil, thus, making it healthier and more productive.
