A fallacy is an element of an argument demonstrated by a flawed logic. Specifically, logical fallacies refer to flaws in reasoning that can throw one’s argument off track and compromise the overall value of an argument (Alejandro 34). In most cases, it is relatively different from a logical conclusion because a logical conclusion emanates from proven facts, and the original assertions or statements can be trusted. This essay will examine the use of logical fallacies in an advertisement by Subway Restaurant.
In this advertisement, Michael Phelps advocates for Subway sandwiches. The logical fallacy is the false cause, which indicates that to be like Michael Phelps on has to eat Subway sandwiches, which is definitely a flawed argument. This is a clear example of an appeal to authority, as Michael Phelps is largely used as a Subway’s spokesperson to endorse Subway assertions, as well as its products (Reeves91210).
Furthermore, the argument that if one eats sandwiches from Subway they are likely to be like Michael Phelps is a clear example of a hasty generalization. Ideally, it is fallacious and illogical to believe that if you eat Subway products you will eventually become like Phelps. Additionally, this advertisement also employs the logical fallacy of “appealing to emotion.” Specifically, the advertisement depicts a scenario where Michal Phelps’s mother gives him a Subway sandwich (Reeves91210). This illustration appeals to emotions because it suggests that if you want to become a good mother you should buy your children Subway sandwiches, which will definitely appeal to mothers who are unable to identify this logical fallacy. Finally, at the end of the advertisement, Phelps’s mother suggests, "The official training restaurant of the Phelps family" and Michael Phelps shouts “and athletes everywhere." Ideally, this is an example of a bandwagon logical fallacy because Michel Phelps suggests that all athletes eat sandwiches at subways; therefore, you should also do the same (Reeves91210).
