Science provides some cues as to how humans ought to behave. According to the evolution theory suggested by Darwin, natural selection affects all the creatures on earth (Futuyma, 2009). In this case, humans, just as all other living things seek to compete for space, wealth, and any other means of survival. Even though the modern man has changed the environment greatly, the inherent competition depicted in the evolution of mankind has not stopped. The rich seek to be richer while the poor seeks to liberate themselves from poverty. However, it’s worth noting that in as much as the poor struggle to be rich, they are employed by the rich who willfully manipulate means of production as well as policies such that the poor are not favored. Therefore, the mighty becomes stronger in the expense of the weak. In the event calamities such as drought, the poor are affected more than the rich since the poor die as the rich survive the droughts. Rarely would the rich truly mind the poor and hence the Darwin scientific explanation of natural selection guides how humans interact.
Humans act on the land with focus on what benefit them (Leopold, 1948). The essence of human actions is purely based on what man gets from such actions. In this case, the environment would suffer the consequences of human actions in as much as man derives gratification from it. The useless environmental aspects such as bogs, deserts, etc. serves no immediate economic benefits to man and hence man would seek to modify them for his benefits or ignore them. The education systems are made such that they teach humans how to exploit the environment for personal gain and whether the environment suffers, that comes secondary after the primary needs are achieved. The society is wired to seek maximum benefits from the environment with the least regards to what happens to it. The inherent human competition does not help in this case.
