Labor relations are the vertical and horizontal relationships among employees, or the employees and their managers. They are the “people” issues and interactions that are encountered every day in the workplace. The rules and regulations that govern labor relations define the boundaries that should not be crossed in the employer-employee relationship and the boundaries within which they should operate . Labor relations also define the procedures and requirements of the employers and the employees in their interactions such as the wages, contract requirements and pension.
Labor relation skills are necessitated by the political, economic and demographic factors of the general environment of a person. Possessing labor relation skills makes people better leaders in the work place in whatever environment. It is because of a bargainer’s labor relations expertise that earns the company a million dollar tender. Labor relation skills are important across all the levels of management in an organization. The labor relations skills are ignored in many occasions and that leaves many labor relations professionals are acquainted with just the theoretical part of the skills.
The National Labor Relations Act that was enacted in 1935 defines the rights of the employers and the employee in their relations with one another. The act protects the employee and the employer from unfair and oppressive bargaining acts, and curtails practices sin the private sector that could be harmful to the welfare of the employers or the employees, the businesses or even the economy of the United States. Another is the Civil Rights Act that was passed into law in 1964 that protects the employees against race, gender or religion-based discrimination. The Fair Labor Standards Act defines the standards of fair wage and overtime compensation. Many other laws pertaining to the wages of the employees are enacted by different states. However, the laws have a shortcoming in that they do not cover independent contractors .
In conclusion, labor relations skills are required at every level of interaction in the work place. The employers and the employees should be acquainted with the necessary labor relation skills and laws in order to cultivate a professional, enlightened and peaceful work environment. However, the labor relation acts are limited to employees. That leaves independent contractors vulnerable to abuse and exploitation, especially if they do not possess labor relations skills and strong bargaining power. They are protected by their strong bargaining power.
