Gott, Edith Suzanne, and Kristine Ploughman. 2010. Contemporary African fashion. Bloomington, IN: Indiana University Press. http://site.ebrary.com/id/10481742.
The Contemporary African Fashion is a book on fashion under the contribution of Gott, Edith Suzanne, and Kristine Ploughman. The compilation by Gott entails the coverage of fashion within Africa, the fashion in Diaspora and African fashion designers. The author portrays remarkable biases in the fashion adopted on the African continent. One word used in the book is modesty (Gott, 17). Thus, the kind of fashion is commendable in religious, tradition, and modern setting.
In the selection of the book, the importance of style revealed from the cover that fashion is beyond dressing. It further shows the arts in creativity and design. The book serves an inspiration to the upcoming fashion designers by challenging their capabilities. The focus is particularly clear from the kind of images included, directing the source designers of the products. Such products are Agbada, a loose fitting robe extending to the ankles (Gott, 23). In addition, there is Aso oke cloth, a ceremonial cloth made by the Yoruba men of Nigeria, that incorporates patterns of dyed decorations woven into strips (Gott, 24).The discovery of the source was during a time when I was watching a TV show in the Africa’s fashion. The source contains deficiency of guidelines on how one can try to make a similar product. In addition, the source does not exhaust on all the African countries. Only a few a sample coverage of the countries assist in portraying the fashion in African.
Ribeiro, Aileen. The Arts of Fashion and Fictions: Dress in Art and Literature in Stuart England. New Haven [Conn.: Yale University Press, 2005. Print.
Ribeiro is a professor of the history of art of dress and lecturer at the Institute of Courtauld in Art at the University of London. The works compiled by this professor in the book entails what he refers as Fashion and Fiction, covering the region of Stuart England. The author focuses on the garment that was common in England and popular among the wealthy and noble families during the eighteenth century. In addition, the authors consider the portraits and fashion engravings are surviving from that era to the present.
The book's cover caught my attention when walking in the University library and decided to explore further into the book. The cover reveals what look like a fiction image of a dressed wealthy or noble woman. The book, therefore, reveals interesting facts of nobility that most would like to explore. The focus was the design and appearance of the men’s cloth in Stuart England. The dressing revealed in common to incorporate a broad-brimmed hat, and a slashed doublet with a broad lace of reticella collar and cuffs (Ribeiro, 15). The source does not reveal children dressing. In addition, there is no inclusion of the explanation for the survival of such a unique fashion.
Storey, Nicholas. 2015. The History in Men's Fashion: What a Well-Dressed Man is wearing. Havertown: Remember When. http://public.eblib.com/choice/publicfullrecord.aspx?p=1274706.
The book on the history of Men’s fashion addresses what the well-dressed man is wearing is entailing the works of Storey and Nicholas. The author of the book provides information on the history of fashion among men. In addition, the book explores different types of cladding a man can have to show decency in the present. For instance, the book recommends wearing of “Only & Sons Scoop neck T-shirt” during a calm day or “Selected Harrington Jacket” for casual wear (Storey, 18).
The selection of the book was mainly because of the up to date fashion coverage and emphasis (16). The book is illustrative and well descriptive. It involves some background for every suggestion, creating a sense of appreciation on the new fashion designs. As such, the book serves as a clear guideline to men who are fashion lovers. However, any person who does not like fashion has a chance of doing the same because of the clarity and the simplicity of the book, inclusive of general summary (Storey, 14). The source was from social media that was advertising on the men’s wear. The source should have included the women’s fashion for gender equitability.
