Gender Equality Essays Example

The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) views gender equality as “the measurable equal representation of women and men.” Further, they suggest that gender equality accepts that although men and women are different, they nonetheless possess equal societal value and should therefore be treated as equals. Additionally, the IPPF points out that in the view of the United Nations, gender equality is a fundamental human right and that the empowerment of women (who tend to be the disadvantaged in terms of gender equality) is also a vital tool in the fight to advance development and reduce poverty. The IPPF also notes that a common area of gender inequality is in the realm of equal pay rates across the sexes. Far too many women are paid less than workers of the opposite sex, even though they do the same work. That is a primary reason why the vast majority of the poor people in our world are women and girls, who comprise seven out of every ten of the world’s poor, living on the daily equivalent of less than US$ 1. The right to vote is another area of gender inequality. For example, women in Saudi Arabia do not have the vote. Overall, various forms of discrimination against females continue to keep gender inequality alive (“What is gender equality?” n.d.).
