Feudalism is a government system wayback medieval times. It was a military hierarchy wherein the lords or rulers grant armies, barons, and bishops’ lands in exchange of their military service or as gifts. It is still being discussed if it begun in Romanic or Germanic remains.
Some merchants temporarily rent the land of barons, and they pay their fief or give a part of their harvest to the ruler and barons. The peasants on the other hand are the ones at the bottom of the feudal tree. They work for the lord or barons and get a piece of land for themselves in return.
The bishops have power same as the barons. They receive lands as gift from rulers called diocese. These are lands owned by nuns, priests, and monasteries that are being rented by people in the lower part of the feudal tree. These was the period when the Catholic Church has a very strong influence to people and are giving their tithes to the church that made the bishops rich and powerful as well.
During this time, the bishops and archbishops sit as part of the king’s council. In the early 10th century, Germany re-established kingship in the country. During this time, the king assumed the position of protecting the Papal State and papal election from the roman nobles. The Catholic Church was only church in Europe in the medieval period. Catholic churches have their own sets of laws as well.
Most of the bishops were from noble families while the parish priests are from humble beginning. But all of them especially the bishops are the ruler of the dioceses or land owned by the church. With all the power and wealth of the people from the church, people from noble families and other positions are trying to be associated to them. More often than not lords associated to church assume the role of judge in the manor. So if the peasants who do not own themselves as per medieval law has to be punished, it can be inflicted by the lords.
Given the political status of the bishop, the closer the nobles get to the church the more favor they can get from the king or from the bishop. This affects everyone in a kingdom with the Catholic churches’ power during the middle ages: people are following whatever they say, they give ten percent of what they have, pay for the tax of part of the diocese they rent and if they commit mistakes, they will be punished according to the law of the church which is separate from the law of the kingdom itself.
Anyone who can be associated with the bishops or priests can get sort of immunity and power depending on the level of closeness they get to each other. Given for example a German noble, who is related to a bishop got involved in a feud or a problem with land to another noble, it will be easier for the former to win the kings favor for there is someone on his side who is trusted by the king.
The bishops themselves can get as much as what they want from the people, land money, or property just by using the name of the church or their title since the Catholic Church is respected by everyone. People in this power or close to this power can abuse, the peasants, women, and those who are in the lower part of the feudal tree.
May it be in Rome or Germany where Christianity is popular at the time said, anyone close to the church can be of real good or bad depending on their motives. It was a time when people are blinded by the name of the religion and not by decision and when power can be easily achieved even if it is just one string that you have, as long as that string is connected to the church and the king.
