Night time dramas do employ different kinds of genres such as legal drama, medical drama, forensic, soap opera, and teen drama among others. Unlike before when night time dramas are only using one genre, today they embrace the art of combining genres in order to create diversity in terms of interpretation and notion depending on the audiences’ demographic profile. This is consistent to Fiske’s argument that society is not stationary but is dynamic – which means that the popular taste in television shows, particularly on night time dramas changes from time to time. In other words, in order for television companies to maintain their number of audience, they must be able to respond to the changing needs of the popular masses. Furthermore, many night time dramas do not provide closure in their storylines so that it would encourage audiences to make their own conclusions or interpretations on the drama that they watched. Blurring genres is nowadays common among night time dramas. Very common is the combination of soap opera and medical drama or soap opera and legal drama. One very famous example is Grey’s Anatomy, which combines medical drama and soap opera. Even sometimes, genres that are relatively serious such as legal drama and medical drama are combined with practical jokes or comedy to appeal to the varying and wider tastes of the audiences. Of course, there are many other genre combinations in night time drama but the most common is medical-soap opera or legal-soap opera. Apparently, the amalgamation and blurring of genres is used to subtly create scenes that are socially relevant to audiences so that through this technique, the viewers will be able to hook themselves up in the dramas that they watch and, commercially, it would allow more profit to producers and advertisers.
