Good Essay On Defense Spending And The Military

The iron triangle model of policy making is a model that gives details of how interest groups come up to having a great influence above the policies made in the areas that have an effect on them. In this model, the group of interest manipulates the Congress, more particularly, Congressional committees that are significant to them by the use of methods like campaign contributions and mobilization of voters. D. Johnson (2003). These groups of interest can adequately manipulate the re-election of a member of Congress in return for giving them support to their programs.
The group of interest also influences the appropriate government agencies. In his farewell speech, the President Eisenhower gave out a warning about of the influence of military-industrial complex on government entities. During his two terms of presidency, Eisenhower kept on connecting the economic strength of the country with its security. D. Johnson (2003). He emphasized that our economic health and the strength of the military are equal supports of our national security.
Despite the fact that the iron triangle model is a good basis for describing and getting to understand how the method works, it does not correctly show the process of creating the defense expenditure policy, deciding who gets what amount of money and from where does he get this money. Much of the pentagon’s financial plan has served as a lightly indirect jobs program that has formed influential, well-established political constituencies who resist reductions in military expenditure even in times of peace. In conclusion, this model does not also serve the interest of the people but the interest of the entities that are influential to the government agencies and the agencies themselves. The model has robbed the people of their resources, toils and sources of revenue.
