Introduction

Armoires are a captivating works of elegant artisanship. They come in different sizes. Armoires are big free-standing wardrobes made of solid wood and laminated materials. They are versatile pieces of art whose origin dates back to over 500 years ago in Europe. Indeed, armoires are an old time pieces of art developed over many years. To be more precise, armoires originated from France. Indeed, they also come in the form of portable cupboards that may have shelves, doors, and drawers. Notably, there are various designs of armoires for different purposes. For instance, some can hold televisions, computer equipment, and the audio-visual media collections. As well, armoires can keep clothing, photo albums and china (Vance, 2007).Interestingly, they imbue the room with an attractive and excellent outlook. Modern developments have brought numerous and artistic modifications to the armoires. This tutorial provides the steps involved in refinishing an old armoire for the interior and exterior parts.
My tutorial will target carpenters involved in accessorizing and beautifying if homes. Additionally, it will include the house planners and decorators. My audience will require at least the basic carpentry skills for them to complete the task.

Necessary Tools and Materials

This process will involve the following tools.
Stain and paints
Painting brush
Closed coated abrasives papers made of glass and garnet
Chisels
Gauges
Gloves
Sanding block
Wood varnish
Duster (Brett, 2005)
Plane
The Process
Refinishing an old armoire will involve the following main steps for the exterior part.
Take the duster and use it to dust out the dust for the armoire.
Smooth plane the flat surfaces of the armoire.
Scrap the planed surfaces to remove the torn grain and minor blemishes.
Take the chisel and mallet and hit the top of the chisel to carve the desired shape. This step will involve impressing on the previous design. For instance, it can include a crisscrossing pattern containing the two zigzag lines extending from the top of the armoire to the bottom part.
Wrap the abrasive paper around the sanding block to smoothen the flat surfaces of the armoire ensures uniform surface. Rub down parallel grain with the rough paper. Note, the specific abrasive is the closed coated abrasives. There are two types of abrasives, the open-coated and the closed coated. Preference is primarily on the latter because they are made up pf closely-bonded particles for fast and excellent finishing. Open coated abrasives have more spaced particles that clog up less readily. As such they are only suitable for the resinous timbers (Brett, 2005).

Take a piece of cloth and dip it into the varnish.

Gently apply the varnish to the sides of the armoire.
Leave it to dry.
For the interior part, follow the first three steps. Afterward, use the half-inch chisel to engrave the internal finishes. The interior trims will involve the coving and skirting. Use hand sanding to complete the internal parts of the armoire (Brett, 2005). Smoothen the carved surfaced by pressing the abrasive paper through the carved areas. Apply varnish and leave to dry for 24 hours in a cool and dry place.
Note that, there are more modification actions for the old armoire. For instance, shaping it to give it a rectangular shape and a non-interference-fit-clearance with a closet. As well, it can involve forming the armoire to have exterior trim pieces that extend beyond the measurements of the rectangular closet (Vance, 2007).

Conclusion

The process has enabled us to refinish an old armoire. Thus, it looks much better and attractive. Important to note is that, the user must handle the armoire with proper care to ensure that the surface does not peel off. In addition, the user must keep the armoire from direct contact with the floor and sunlight so that it maintains its beautiful finish. The refinishing allows the armoire to have a thin layer of sheathing and lathe.
