Movie review

This critique is based on a series of four photographs by Antoine Singletary. All four photographs are of the same relative size and have been manipulated using Adobe Photoshop. They are presented in soft colors that an above average brightness adjustment done to light them. Each of the four photographs features human subjects as the dominant elements. The human subjects dominate the frames and are either placed centrally or in symmetry with their surroundings. In all the images, the human subjects are located in the foreground and are in sharp focus. This sharp focus contrasts with the clarity of the surrounding middle ground and background, which appear blurry. This paper presents a one-by-one analysis of the series of four photographs by Antoine Singletary.
The first photograph (figure 1) bears the title Stephanie. It features a man whose face is turned away from the camera, seemingly in conversation with the blonde woman facing him. The blonde woman is smiling and tilting her head slightly towards her right shoulder. On her left-hand side, her blond hair flows just behind her left eye, covering part of her left cheek onto her chest.
On her right-hand side, her hair simply drops to her shoulder and chest. Her eyes are directly angled towards those of the man. He lips look pressed lightly together to reveal a smile, while still concealing her teeth. The model is drawn sharply into focus while the photographer looks blurred. This focus illustrates the fact that the model is the centerpiece of this image. Her slightly tilted head, smile, straight gaze, and low-cut pink top bring put her allure and femininity.
The second photograph (figure 2) bears the title “Jenny”. Like the first photograph, it also features a blonde woman. The woman is standing next to a wall that looks like a photo gallery. Behind her is a hallway receding into the background. The woman’s hair is parted two-ways at the top of her head and held in two pigtails that flow behind her ears and rest on her chest. Two pins keep her hair neatly pressed to the side of her head, allowing only two pigtails to break from the two main braids. She is wearing a black top that almost merges with the dark color tones surrounding her.
This woman looks serious and in a pensive mood. She looks like she is suppressing her true nature because of the presence of someone or because of unfamiliar surroundings. Her seemingly quiet demeanor looks like a mask for a louder and livelier personality.
The third photograph (figure 3), bears the title “Jenny and Nick.” As the title suggests, it features a man and a woman. The two of them look like they are in their early or mid-twenties. They are placed almost symmetrically in the foreground, with what seems to be rays of light from the setting sun behind them. The angle of their arms indicates that they are holding hands, though the image does not capture their hands. Jenny bears the same pensive look as in the second photograph. Nick’s eyes are facing away from the camera, and he looks uncomfortable. This photograph looks awkward because the subjects do not look composed. However, one can tell that the subjects have some attraction towards each other that they do not know how to express outwardly.
The fourth photograph seems like the culmination of a story. It is titled “Nick going Crazy.” Nick is seated on a couch at home in a white tee-shirt and underwear. His arms are resting on his knees, which are resting on his chest. His face looks blank as he stares forwards. It is not clear whether Nick is looking at something, but his expressionless face shows that he is in deep thought.

The four images may be combined to tell a story. Although the first photograph features a woman who is not in the photographs, one may speculate that the man in the first photograph is Nick. In addition, one may also speculate that the woman in the first photograph could be causing strain to the apparent relationship between Jenny and Nick (as illustrated in the third photograph). The last image could be a depiction of Nick’s challenge in settling the tensions that have affected his relationship with Jenny. The four photographs encompass proper use of lighting and balancing of subjects to create symmetry and clarity. The photographer has made a deliberate effort to eliminate shadows. Overall, the four photographs present themselves to various other interpretations.
