Social stratification is the grouping of people according to their socioeconomic based on occupation, income, wealth as well as social status. Typically, social stratification is manifested into three social classes, which include; upper class, middle class as well as lower class. Egypt is highly stratified since the phenomenon is widely spread aiming to expose the components of life, which composes these social classes hence exploring the relationship between these classes. Therefore, this essay evaluates how social stratification in Egypt is more open to the people given that there is the unequal distribution of resources in Egypt.
In most cases, sociologists refer this kind of stratification as a status system whereby people are grouped according to their social prestige. In essence, Prestige differ wealth and power since they are objective entities and individuals can acquire them regardless of the state they are at present. Top government officials express their sense of power in terms of wealth since they are more active politically hence influencing political decisions while discriminating the ideas of the less fortunate in the society.
The class system elaborates the open system of stratification whereby the positions of people in Egypt are achieved as well as changeable through education and skills. The social class can be moved from one position to another depending on its economic development in the country. The relationship between inequality and development is experienced in the open stratification in Egypt. Through education, pressure for democracy also increases causing inequality to diminish in Egypt.
Consequently, the role of women in the national development contributes to the open system of stratification more especially through domestic work and gainful employment. Essentially, when women contribute towards their society particularly on gainful employment, their societies tend to be wealthier. Women contribute to the economy of Egypt through domestic work hence promoting an open system of stratification in Egypt. Through the achievement of personal characteristics which has opened up higher status among individuals. Some of the characteristic influence individual mobility such as race a as well as place of residence. For instance, people living in urban areas have a greater chance of upward mobility as compared to people living in rural areas. Therefore, open system of stratification in Egypt in most cases acts as the force pushing a person up the status ladder.
Social mobility as a form of open stratification takes several forms involving vertical mobility and horizontal mobility. In addition, mobility can be grouped in terms of intergenerational as well as intergenerational. This system of stratification helps to give the nation assistance in order to prevent exploitation of the poor countries from the rich countries. Exploitation is the legacy of colonialism.
The open system of stratification in Egypt is directly proportional to my society since most people are discriminated in terms of distribution of resources. Due to inequality in my society, a number of individuals are among the homeless. The level of poverty has increasingly affected the youth in our society due to shortage of inexpensive houses for poor families. Another vital component affecting our society in the open system of stratification is the decreasing demands for unskilled labor, which has resulted to high unemployment among the men, in general. Additionally, the erosion of public welfare benefits has increased the ranks of the extreme poverty.
In our society, women have fewer opportunities in terms of employment as compared to men. Women are overworked since they perform a number of activities ranging from domestic chores to working on the farms whereby men work for few hours in a day. The high level of poverty has necessitated individuals to be victim of debt of bondage.
There are a number of similarities of open stratification and closed stratification systems. These may include the fact that both systems have unequal distribution of resources. The two recognize the role of women in the society for the development of the economy of the nation. Both systems face a high rate of individuals living below the poverty level. In addition to this, the problem of unemployment is experienced in both systems of stratifications. Lastly, both systems explore the poor and the weak.
There are differences between open systems of stratification and closed stratification systems. First, closed systems require skilled labor in order to perform a certain job whereas open motivates people to work hard promising them rewards such as money, power as well as prestige. Second, open systems of stratification are useful for understanding how foreign exploitation help perpetuate poverty in many nations in Africa whereas the closed system of stratification ignore how the nation themselves contribute to their economic deprivation. Third, open system of stratification support as well as value in educating the girl child whereby the closed system of stratification advocates that it is a waste of time and money to educate a girl child.
In conclusion, social stratification divides people and countries into different classes the rich and the poor. Therefore, symbolic interactions as well as social inequality influence how people interact with one another. Additionally, diverse persons interact according to their status thus creating a gap between the rich and the poor in the society.
