Grief is the natural emotion which emerges from the loss of a loved one, a relationship or something near to the heart. The grief expression is different from different people. Some people will show their grief loudly while other will pretend to be normal and contented while they will be grieving inside for the loss. The grief undergoes five stages which are followed by all people conventionally.
The first stage is the utter denial and isolation of the person. The person who is grieving denies the fact of the loss and cannot accept at any cost that he has lost the loved one. Moreover, everyone would try to convince him about the loss. Therefore, he adapts isolation from the people and society until he copes up with his grief. Soon the person realizes the loss and accepts it as reality, an emotion of anger runs through his body. The person grieving can blame anyone for the loss of loved one in anger. The anger could last for some time and bargaining emotions commenced after that. Anger is followed by the helplessness thoughts of ifs. The person starts to think in the manner that if they had done this, he would have been saved, etc. these thoughts come every now and the in the mind of the person. These helplessness feelings lead to mourning and the person mourns over the loss strongly such that he develops depression. In this state of depression, if someone rejoices the person and helps him get out of the depression then the person tries to accept the loss. This acceptance is the last stage of the grief because the person has accepted the death and is now no longer facing the immense emotions of grief which develop due to the sudden loss of the loved one (Axelrod, 2015).
Wolterstorff was the professor of philosophical theology at the Yale Divinity School. He had suffered the grief of the loss of his son who was 25 years old in an accident. The grief is unconditional because it is very hard to accept the loss of a son whom he grew for past 25 years. He mourned over his death but then find joy after his loss. The joy came from the thought that he would be able to see his son again according to the Christian beliefs. He accepted that we all have to leave this place, and God will recreate us one day. He found joy in thinking about that one day when he can meet his son again. Hence, he was happy to acknowledge that he can see his son again (Wolterstorff, 1987).
‘Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him’ (Thessalonians 4:13-14). This quote from the bible illustrates the meaning of death in Christianity which is based on the fact that those who have died will be raised again one day as Jesus was raised. All the people will be resurrected from their graves.
The hope of being resurrected helps Wolterstorff in getting out of his grief since, he is contented with the thought that he will get another chance to meet his son and communicate with him when they all will be raised again that is resurrected. The chance of getting the son again satisfies him for the time period as he is out of the grief of losing his son forever.
