Politics has no part in execution and inception of work art. The Tschudi affair began as a dispute over the quality of various paintings. The affair tends to be the pressure in the field of art. On the same note, Tschudi affair provides some information on how Germany was ruled during the last period before the war. The J.H van Eegeren collection came in the market on 1907, which was an opportunity for Hugo von Tschudi to close the gaps in the museum (Paret 96). Tschudi added paintings by Daurnier, Courbet, and Gericault. Tschudi took the initiative to negotiate for favorable prices. William II imagined that Tschudi would pay for the paintings, which is unclear up to date why William II imagined that.
During the Prussian Diet debate, the German Emperor made decision not to help Tschudi. The speakers attacked the director on the ground that he disregarded the terms that formed the foundation of the Museum. In the year 1861, Consul Wagener left 262 paintings to Prussian king on the terms that the collection will be expanded. Wagener’s will was not specific to the condition. The unspecific terms of the will formed a defensive mechanism for Tschudi. Tschudi asserted that the purchase of the painting had reduced the National Gallery.
William II during the era of modernism in Germany asserted greater importance and value to art. Art in the Prussian government was a secondary avenue for public responsibility. The Emperor believes that he was talented in the field of art. William II derived tremendous pleasure from paintings and sculpture (Paret 105). The classical tradition responded to the moral values and standards of the industrial age. The emperor believes that art is part of German strength. The emperor to some extent was opposed to modernism because of aesthetic conviction.
In organizations, which are characterized by the absolutist principles and modern bureaucratic principles, the National Gallery has a critical place. The National Gallery incorporates art collected since 1800. During the leadership of Tschudi modern paintings was brought to the National Gallery and created a comparison platform between the German art and other foreign art. William II increased the National Gallery surveillance during the leadership of Tschudi.
The German public was helpless before the era of modern art. The Germany public need an opportunity to educate itself on exhibitions and museums. Warner from his youth emphasized on liberal and moderate convictions. In fact, one of the examples of Werner’s conservative and liberal elements are based on the Jewish question (Paret 112)). Warner took charge of the National gallery when Tschudi left the position. Werner was reluctant to take the post until Tschudi was no longer the leader of the National Gallery. Under the leadership of Werner, the National Gallery was o undergo purification. These marked the beginning of a war between modernism and tradition.
The emperor detailed the report on policies and history of the museum. During Tschudi’s leadership, Werner wrote 75 paintings. The rationale behind these was justified by the space of the holdings. The state purchased contemporary foreign art under the leadership of Werner. The Tschudi affair did not coincide with the Daily Telegraph. The Daily Telegraph was important to political history.
