Abstract
This essay explores the role of the sixteenth US president Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and afterwards. The struggle between North and South were among the causes of the war. The research shows that the war gave development to a free society and the emancipation of slaves. The North and South were two different societies with different cultures and vision. The production of cotton increased, but the importing of slaves that was banned in 1808(Rothman, 2009). However, the planters of the South brutally suppressed the uprisings of slaves (Rothman, 2009).
