Dorothy Gale was the heroine in the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz (Fleming, & LeRoy, 1939). Dorothy was an adolescent from rural Kansas during the 1930’s who lived on a farm with her aunt and uncle. She was the only child on the farm and was surrounded by hard-working adults who cared for her, but who were required to work hard out of necessity.
