It can sometimes seem that math class and English class exist on the opposite of the learning spectrum. I make this statement because it seems commonplace for someone who says, “I hate math,” to be someone who loves English. The opposite is also true, it seems that people who say, “I hate English class” are often the ones who most enjoy math. While this it not true in every case, stereotypically it seems true for many people. This is because there are big differences in the type of intelligences that excel at language and mathematical and logical reasoning. The purpose of this essay is to compare the similarities of these classes to get a better handle of why some students who love one subject can feel so strongly against the other. While the differences are obvious, the similarities can sometimes be forgotten when one focuses on differences.
Grammar in English case functions much like formulas in math class. The English language, or any language, is a systematic way to communicate with one anther. While there are many exceptions in English to the various rules of grammar, the basic principles can be though of as the laws and equations that govern math. Just like a person cannot use any formula they want, a person cannot construct a sentence without following the rules of grammar which states what each word can do and how words should be combined to form meaning. Just like there are rules for writing equations, there are rules for writing sentences. Symbols are used to create meaning in math and symbol is used to create meaning in English.
Each class is taught under the same educational principles. English and Math are both taught in the settings, which I and many students receive them in the lecture form. While this is widely seen as the standard way to teach a class, in ancient times Greek teachers taught their students by going on a walk. But both English and Math are taught using the same basic idea—that there is a teacher who lectures a group of seated students. So while the subjects are different, the classes are taught in much the same way—a teacher writes on a board, students take notes in their desks, the teacher stands and the students sit.
Both English and Math are taught progressively. This means that they introduce basic concepts and build off of them to get more complicated. This happen in English grammar, but it also happens with reading of literature. In math, this is more critical than ever, since some concepts in math will not be understood unless other, underlying concepts are understood. Just as English grammar moves on from simple sentences to complicated ones, Math stars with simple equations and functions and then gets progressively more complicated.
What is different about English and Math is not how it is taught, but the content of those teachings. Teachers in the western world have a very specific style and way of imparting information to students. So even in subjects as different as math and English, there are still noteworthy similarities in the way that they are taught. They also both deal in language. One is the language of art, music and poetry. The other is the language of logic, a language that underlies much of our modern lives.
