Tim Burton is a great director and author who created a huge number of bright images. His films are popular in every corner of the world. His works immediately become significant after a premiere. Burton`s created a new style of filming - dark, eccentric, however, infinitely compelling and ironic. In many ways, this is why the life and work of the great master attract such a large audience. The phenomenon of Tim Burton is worth to be studied: marginal Director, without respite creates in his films one surreal world after the other, for many years he`s been a favorite "enfant terrible" of Hollywood (EBIRI, BILGE, 20-23). Timothy Walter Burton was born on 25 August 1958. He grew up in Burbank, Los Angeles suburb, where the rows of identical houses repeat each other. He loved his family, but did not feel a full connection with his relatives. Burton was born in the 50's, when a narrow idea of "normality" was immortalized by the Puritan vision of the "American dream". He was suspended from neighbors and family, looking for some solace playing at the local cemetery. However, gravestones brought just temporary relief. The pressure of adaption to the life inside the society has made Burton focused on himself, and this is the answer why he was spilling out his art. He had an ally, his teacher of arts in high school, Doris Adams, who encouraged her students to choose their own roads. Art became his catharsis and a way to escape into a fantasy world. Peers at school hung on him the label "strange" for his creative tendencies, and from an early age, he learned about society trends to categorize and judge everything. He had an allergy to the categorization and authority. The role of outcast gave Burton unexpected freedom in expressing himself. He took the status of a "different man" and this choice has shaped his artistic talents. His experiments were his stories. From the outset, Burton was a visual storyteller. Burton always tried to invent his own ways, used an artwork instead of doing homework.
Many of his drawings and films come from the early influences. His short animated film "Vincent" is a tribute to Vincent Price, which quotes some lines from the Poe`s poem "The Raven". Later, he collaborated with Price again, in the movie "Edward Scissorhands" 1990, and did the documentary film "Conversations with Vincent", which had never been released. He worked with Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, and Charlton Heston. A scene from the cartoon "Jason and the Argonauts" was included in the music video, which Burton directed for the band "The Killers". His film "Corpse bride" 2005, is filled with the taste of the Day of the Dead, where the underground world of the dead sings a cute song, but the real world is obviously sinister. Such pictures as "Sleepy Hollow" 1999 and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" 2007, reflects some of the main Burton`s moods (Feeney, Nolan, 2014).
In 1979, Tim Burton began to work at Disney, first as a designer of characters, and then as an animator. He was fired several times and then re-adopted. For a long time Burton collaborates with the Studio Disney and then, In November 2007, the studio announces its intention to put Burton in two 3D animation projects: the production of "Alice in Wonderland" and the remake of his own film "Frankenweenie". Burton wanted to be not only the director, but also the producer and co-writer of the new version of "Frankenweenie".
In 2007, Tim Burton was marked as one of the 50 greatest Directors in film history by Entertainment Weekly. Burton took the 49th place and became the youngest one among the designated persons. In October 2008, Burton was awarded the "Scream" for his contribution to the development of the genre of horror movies. In 2010, Burton becomes the chairman of the jury of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival.
"I will never forget how I met Tim Burton for the first time. He was in something like a waiting room, in one of those huge buildings that hang over Hollywood pavilions. I went in and saw a guy standing in the corner, his hands were deep in his pockets, as if he were looking for something that wasn`t there. He and I were dressed alike in black, and we both had a black hair, strategically combed to remain unnoticed. I had the honor to work with him on "Beetle Juice" and "Edward Scissorhands", and he resembles a caring friend. He still has the same character and spirit that made me "fall in love" with him twenty years ago" (Winona Ryder). He is considered one of the brightest and most interesting directors in Hollywood, who has managed to combine in his work the author's intent and impressive cash charges. Together with Terry Gilliam, he is an example of a true storyteller of this century, using a high technology and the expensive special effects to create a new vision of cinema as an art of the future. In June 21, 2012 at the Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF), Tim Burton awarded for contribution to the world cinema. This award once again shows how important is Burton`s work.
