I have always had a deep rooted belief: I can re-invent myself whatever challenges I might encounter. Raised in a family in which hard work has been a daily ritual, I have come to experience firsthand how diligence pays off, even if I did not get instant results. My parents, and later my professors at college, inculcated in me how valuable is investing in self development – at all levels – so one can re-invent oneself innovatively in case conditions become adverse. The story of how I have come to appreciate everything, however small, goes back to my early childhood.
As a child, I was fond of discovery, looking for newness and, frequently, reorganization. I was a child, I was told, who preferred to stay hours alone to re-organize his room, shelving and unshelving books. Indeed, I would invent ways of how to organize books on shelves so I can recall them later easily. Sometimes, I would stack books one on top of another. Sometimes, I would order books according to size, color or author's first name. (Later, I would work for a while as a book reviewer. I was really good at reading quickly and meaningfully.)
In middle school, I started discovery in earnest by participating in school camping trips. At camping sites, I would wander and get a sense of where I was. After many trips, I became very familiar with outdoor camping. This helped me, in fact, many years later, to re-invent my accommodation style by opting for living in a sailing boat so that I would no longer have to bother about crowdedness and unfriendly neighbors.
In college, I was immersed deeply in my studies. I was very studious. So, after completing my first major, I decided to go to another school. I achieved great results which made me eligible for a scholarship. I spent four years abroad and I was re-made again – now more profoundly.
Spending years abroad has not only helped me rediscover worlds I could have never conceived but also changed my view of worlds I had already known. Instead of a bookish student and a dreamer, I developed a deeper sense of appreciation for differences as I came to meet different people from different cultures and interests. My early belief in self-reinvention was materialized in how I came to communicate and understand.
Setting out in a long but very meaningful professional journey, I continued to pick up experiences and skills which do not only continue to help me leverage my professional expertise but also inform new contexts I delve into as I move on along my career path. Unlike most workmates I have encountered – who complain of being stuck in a job or even in a life they cannot escape from – I have always cherished how lucky – and diligent, if I may say – to have dared to step across boundaries since early childhood.
So far, I still find self re-invention a belief deeply rooted in my whole life. Through self re-invention, I have come to entertain and develop ideas in ways which made me different. Through self re-invention, I have come to appreciate whole life more insightfully. Today –and I am sure later as well – I remain self-assured, because, if anything, understanding is never complete unless by self-discovery.
