The end of 1972 was marked by a triumphant re-election for a second term Nixon was relatively quiet for him. Nixon refused to provide comments about the prosecutor's office of government and audio surveillance recorded in the Oval Office tapes documenting conversations Nixon and his assistants (the existence of these records became known to the court from the testimony of some officials). The President also ordered the Attorney General Richardson to fire Cox prosecutor who has made such a request. This has a negative impact on its authority. Richardson refused to comply and Nixon resigned along with his deputy in October. The resignations came to be known as "Saturday massacre". Meanwhile, a series of investigations that have affected the Nixon administration, and came to his Vice President Spiro Agnew, who also resigned in October 1973 (Financial case, unrelated to Watergate). He flatly refused to bring the investigation available to him the film, citing executive privilege. However, the US Supreme Court in July 1974 unanimously determined that the president does not have such privileges, and ordered him to immediately give the film the prosecutor's office.
August 5, already after the conclusion of the impeachment was prepared for transfer to the US Senate, by definition, the Supreme Court made public were committed previously unknown tape recorded June 23, 1972, after only a few days after the incident in Watergate. Nixon discusses them with the head of his administration Holdmenom Watergate story, calls it a smoking gun and then negotiates how to obstruct the investigation with the help of the CIA and FBI. After this publication, even the most fanatical defenders of Nixon was no doubt that the President at the outset of events trying to obstruct justice in personal and party interests; impeachment case became foregone conclusion. Republican senators earlier in the Senate prepared to vote for Nixon, after the publication of films one after another declared he would support a charge on all counts.
Publication of these films became final confirmation of the involvement of Nixon to this scandal. For the head of state is unacceptable to be involved in the game about his evil rival in the election. Thus was trampled sacred right of free expression of the will of the voters. The right decision in this case would be impeachment and call new elections. The best solution for Nixon would immediately admit his guilt.
