There comes a life changing moment in everyone’s life that gives it a new direction. When I was fifteen years old my life totally changed. In 2011, I had just graduated from junior high. I was looking forward, thinking to apply to a reputed high school in my city. Suddenly my parents told me that they were planning to send me to USA for the high school for further and better education. It meant that I would have to spend the rest of my life in a country I had never been to. I was emotional; pushed by them. I did not like it because I hated change. But after giving it a serious thought I realized that that change wasn’t that bad. However through this sudden and unexpected experience of change to a different country for education, I learned that a change can sometimes help us do better in the future.
I am not much of an experimental person; I like things to stay in the same order without much deviation. I was a pampered child; very attached to my parents and too young when my parents decided to send me to USA so that I become independent. The very thought of living without them disturbed me; I wanted to stay close to them. But then I thought of proving myself and took the situation as an opportunity to live independently delicious food and the memories associated with everything here. It was hard to leave my friends and town. I knew I was going to be alone without my loved ones in a totally different country; something I detested. I wanted my life to stay same as before.
However I could not convince my parents to change their decision; they were adamant on sending me to USA. I had to take the call and go ahead; they gave me a book to read. It was “Who Moved My Cheese”; the book offered an insight about the process of change. It was about a mouse that had to keep moving ahead and change place to keep his cheese secure. He took the hard decision of moving away from his comfort zone to be successful. I was determined to take the new life ahead with positivity.
My parents took me to the airport, and watched me get on the plane. The trip was really long, longer than you can think. I was sitting next to the window, watching the beautiful view of my hometown; tears rolled down. The pang of separation made me emotionally weak. After fourteen hours of flying trip, finally I arrived at the Los Angeles airport. It was a new beginning and I had numerous questions about this country; my English was bad and I could hardly understand a single word the people said. I felt really lonely; I missed everything from China; I wanted to go back. But I knew that it was not possible.
After I met my home stay parent; an old couple I felt nice they were very warm. They told me that I was just like a family member and I was just like their grandson. I was moved and hugged them. The first month at school was tough as I failed in all the subjects as American education was totally different from Chinese education. I had almost given up and was dejected. The change was killing me then grandpa guided me and then told me that life is hard. You always need to focus on it and try to solve the problem. If it doesn’t work out then try something different. This was really helpful and I started to learn more things devoted more time to study English. I gave my best and worked hard and I did make it. In the end I achieved my goal and got an A grade in my class. At this point I met a lot of different people and made new friends who were very patient with me. Finally I was comfortable as I had adjusted in my new environment at USA.I learned that change was good for me as it taught me to adapt and grow. With my experience and example I can guarantee that all people like me should give it a try and welcome change for better.
If I stayed back in China under the protection of my family I would have remained a baby throughout my life. But they made a right decision for my growth and gave me a lifetime experience of studying in America. Change in evident in life, the more we try to stop it by resisting it the more we push ourselves towards failure and in experience. So go ahead and change your life as I did.
