Analytical Review of “Inherent Vice”: The Tale of the Entire Nation that Wants to Cling to the Past

The movie entitled “Inherent Vice” encompassed the times of 1960s when technology was not too common, and therefore, human intellectual ability was the foremost weapon that criminologists had to use in order to solve even the untraceable ones. However, the role of Larry Doc Sportello held the film together because he kept the spirit of investigative science intact with the help of following his institutive judgment, and the terms that he used made sense to him only. The language that he applied in order to communicate with himself on a professional level was the greatest barrier in front of those who wanted to distract him from his objective of catching the criminals. He was taken and treated as a fool because his behavior was not socially acceptable, but deep down, at some emotional degree everyone was his fanatic.
The Assistant District Attorney, Penny Kimball eventually fell in love with the investigator, but she kept it a secret because she never wanted to make a fool out of herself in the eyes of the society. Sportello did not grow out of the prominent features of the 1960s, and he rejected the boredom of the 70s that people accepted generally in the name of innovative and novel communal values. In reality, nothing had changed, the hero of the movie realized that, and therefore, he made a significant level of effort regarding fulfillment of his need to carry on the old ways. The tale of the artwork revolves around Sportello’s power to resist change, and during his effort he appeared funny on more than one occasion whereas, he was trying to hold on to culture of 60s that was familiar to him as we all do. I agree with New York Times’ review of the movie when it claims that the film is made in order to partially preserve the values of 60s against those of that had contemporary nature. (In this paragraph, I highlighted the motives of the investigator behind his awkward behavior and attitude, and I provided my agreement that the movie’s key objective was to preserve the values of 60s)
No, I am not in agreement with the statement of the article that suggests that the movie offered a sense of wilderness and thematic disorientation to the audience. However, on closer reflection, one can figure out that the movie considers the social changes that took place at the junction of 1960s and 1970s as spiritless, and therefore, the whole artwork promoted the norms of 60s throughout its runtime. (Over here I analyzed and critically evaluated the thoughts of New York Times’ review that argued that movie was disjointed as far as its theme is concerned)
