According to the International Food Policy Research Institute, there are many people who are still extremely poor. With regards to the Panama Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the first stipulated that it aimed to eliminate extreme poverty by the reach of 2015. However, this is not the case, 70% of the world’s population is still residing in the rural areas and depend upon agriculture. The country Panama has made several attempts to offset the imbalance that exists within its borders especially using the Millennium development goals. They provided a guide through which some of the very disturbing problems such as hunger, education and health related problems. The country is indulged in foreign interrelations with several countries such as Canada in a bid to cut down in poverty. This has been made possible through the various international trades that it is part of. (Nixon 10). This aimed the first target of the MDGs.
Considering the impact of this policy initiated by Obama’s government back in 2009, almost 7 million farmers together with 12.5 million children all over the world were touched by this program as reported by United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The USA government donated a total of $3.5 billion towards the program and this attracted $18.5 billion more and this facilitated the aversion of extreme hunger and poverty in several corners of the world. This was a huge step towards the achievement of Millennium development goals. This is a clear picture that my government is indeed dedicated to support international policies that assist in the achievement of the goals set internationally such as the millennium development goals.
My country indeed favors the first goal which aims to eliminate forms of extreme hunger and poverty by 2015. Even though it hasn’t been achieved by the deadline, Panama government has dedicated a paramount level of its resources into eradicating extreme poverty within its borders and other locations in the world such as Africa. The second goal is another important goal that is favored by Panama in the sense that it has invested in the education of the younger generation that is the future of the country, especially the girls. In addition, several policies are in place guiding the education process throughout the country and outside world such as scholarships. In addition to the first and second and goal, Panama is focused on minimizing if not reducing the child mortality rate within through the betterment and installation of health facilities all over the world. This is evidenced by the huge support the government seeks in order to support its programs across the world.
In order to improve maternal and child care, the Panama government introduced the Health Protection for Vulnerable Populations Program (HPVPP) that was under the support by the World Bank. The program involved several mobile health teams that moved across the rural sector of the country in order to provide care for these children and their mothers. This was in the year 2008 and in accordance to the accomplishment of the goal requiring the betterment of maternal and child care and reduced child mortality (worldbank.org). In addition, there was an introduction of the vaccine aimed to reduce the rates of the rotavirus in the year 2012 in Panama in a bid to achieve the development goal aimed to reduce child mortality and improve health (Bayard, DeAntonio, Contreras, Tinajero, Castrejon, Otego-Barria & Colindres, 2012, p. 96).
