When a homicide is committed, it becomes a sign of fear for all those around that incident, whether it be a neighbor, postman, or any other frequent visitor of the place of crime. However, the most traumatizing effect is rendered upon those known as survivors of homicide victims. Not only do they have a close and special relationship with the homicide victim but some of them are also witnesses of the death of their loved one. The lacerating pain that they must go through after the homicide is what justifies their status as victims.
Laws exist against defamation in order to ordain punishments for libel or slander. In such a crime, the victim of the defamation is hurt because of harm to his reputation or, in short, to his person. The same logic can apply to homicide survivors. They have been traumatized by an experience that is going to have a lasting impact on the shape of their personalities. Some homicide survivors build an incessant fear in their minds, and every unusual activity seems suspicious to them. In extreme cases, they may start hallucinating. Some may also undergo the feeling of guilt for having survived while the other person died. The harrowing experience of witnessing or even discovering the death of a loved one by way of homicide is also enough to induce a person into depression. The intensity of pain or hurt felt by the survivor depends on the type of relationship he/she had with the victim. However, at the end of the day, though not physically hurt, the survivor is also a victim. Although not at the same level as the primary victim, homicide survivors can still come in that category.
