Database Management Systems Role in Managing Organization’s data
A relational database management system (DBMS) provides abundant benefits to an organization. A DBMS makes the organization’s data reliable and easy to access for various development activities. It provides a platform for information retrieval and thereby improving the decision-making process. In the current era of technological advancement, a DBMS is the most important tool for any successful organization (Halpin, 1996).
Issues in Database Systems
Database management systems (DBMS) provide a powerful mechanism for storing and retrieving data. However, there are several issues that must be taken care of for a robust database management system within an organization. The top most issue is data security. Data is vulnerable to major threats and fishing attacks. The other issue in DBMS is the scalability of data when data grows in large volume. Data recovery is another issue that arises in the advent of crash or failure of a DBMS (Coronel, Morris, & Rob, 2009).
Relational Database Systems
Relational Database System (RDBMS) is a form of DBMS that is based on a relational model. An RDBMS would consist of tables that are related to each other through various attributes. There are various normalization techniques associated in an RDBMS. Most of the modern databases like MSSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Sybase and IBM DB2 are based on the RDBMS.
Database Schema
Database schema in a relational database model depicts the complete underlying database. A database schema contains tables, views, procedures and triggers.
Database-Queries
Database queries are the medium of interacting with the database. Queries are required for extracting information and updating data in the database.
Data Modelling with MS Visio
Data model is effectively created using the Microsoft Visio software tool. A database model in Visio depicts the relational model of the underlying database. The model shows the relationships between various tables that are part of the database. MS Visio is the perfect tool for database modeling as it consists of predefined templates. There are a number of shapes and figures in MS Visio that are available for creating a perfect data model (Rosser, 2008).
Database Example
Objective: Database to track students and the courses taken. Additionally track of the instructors that are teaching each course.
Following tables will be required to be created.
The Data Model is created in DatabaseDesign.vsd file.
Attributes: StudentId, Name, Age, Gender, Address, Phone, Hobbies, AdmissionDate
Attributes: CourseId, CourseName, CourseDuration
Student_Courses Table
Attributes: StudentId, CourseId
Intructor Table
Attributes: InstructorId, InstructorName
Instructor_Courses Table
Attributes: InstructorId, CourseId
