Personal Reflection

When I see my mother knitting or tailoring at home, it gives me a sense of belonging. It would be hard to think that arts and crafts teach us a lot about cultures, beliefs, and character. Whatever artwork my mother does, and whenever I am around her when she goes about without the slightest care in the world about what people may think of her act, I get a feeling that here is my mother, portraying an art that was passed on to her by her mother, grandmother and so on. Yes, arts do teach us a lot about our background and I for one am amazed that my mother is such a perfectionist when it comes to designing apparels.
The first question that goes through my mind when I see her knitting or sewing is what prompted her to take to such forms of art? A series of questions then go through my mind as to whether she is content with what she is doing, and if so, how?
One thing I can say for sure is that she has immense patience. Yes, when it comes to designing a garment, or cutting a cloth into a particular shape, a lot of thought goes into how it should be, and how it can be different from the other. Therefore, a lot of thinking is required, and along with creativity comes patience. I don’t think I could sit and design apparel the way she does, and she is never bored by what she does. This does not mean that she doesn’t do anything else. She prepares our breakfast, lunch and dinner, cleans the house once we leave, before sitting down to knit or sew. She is very systematic this way, and this is a quality which I would like to imbibe in me. While to a casual visitor, my mothers work may seem out of the ordinary, little do they realize how much effort and planning goes into her day-to-day work.
This is why I call her a perfectionist. Her art wasn’t learnt from special classes, nor did she go out to train under someone; it was in her blood. Her mother was very good at designing apparels and this must have caught my mother’s attention for her to pursue this trait. Therefore, in addition to learning something on her own, my mother’s arts are a sort of tradition, which has passed on from one generation to another. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone in our family picked it up from her and carried the family tradition further. There are a lot of things that comes to mind when I do see my mother busy with her art; her punctuality, her dedication to work; her love for what she does; her time management; her artistry, and finally, her creativity. These are skills that are thought in management schools, and though my mother has no managerial certificates to show, I am amazed that she has some of the best qualities people pay money to learn.
Had it not been for my keen interest to study her, I would never have guessed how efficient she is. She has all the qualities that surpass some of the top qualities associated with top management school professionals. Hats off to her; I am indeed privileged to have a mother who has the skills to take on the world!
