Persepolis is an animated film based on a Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novel of the same name. The film was directed by the author, herself and Vincent Paronnaud. Perhaps the film can be considered as satirical as it mocks the Islamic Republic of Iran during the 1970s. But the film is more than just a satire. As observed by Bradshaw, Persepolis is a complex, entertaining and robustly alive movie that could not be solely regarded as an anti-Iranian propaganda. Set in revolutionary Iran, Persepolis is about a story of a girl named Marjane who finds herself confused of the political and social environment as she comes to age. Marjane came from a family of well-to-do, liberated people and as a young girl; she was noted for being fond of western culture (Satrapi, & Paronnaud, 2007). Their family’s liberated nature, however, was in stark contrast with the emerging Islamic state of Iran. As the revolution engulfs the country, the young Marjane finds herself caught in the turbulent life of the revolution as her family members and her parents struggled against the backwards system. One of the most notable changes that the revolution brought about is the suppression of women’s freedom. As observed, the revolutionary government forced women to wear traditional clothing beyond their will. Marjane witnessed her family’s persecution as when her parents were abused and threatened by government officials as well as when her uncle who was critically ill died because the government would not allow him to get treatment abroad. As she grows old, Marjane became disillusioned by the system and eventually became increasingly rebellious. Fearing that their daughter might be arrested for her activism, her parents sent her in Europe to study. Marjane squandered her freedom abroad and eventually ended up being alone and isolated after several struggles and failed relationships. She eventually came home and tried to gather herself. Marjane remained rebellious but at the expense of others. At one time, she wrongfully accused a man of goggling at her just to avoid being arrested and married her boyfriend to avoid scrutiny. Her actions though were largely criticized by her grandmother and Marjane eventually realized how she is gradually giving in to the social pressures of the revolutionary government. In the end, Marjane was forced to leave again but this time, she resolved never to lose sight of her identity. In one of the last scenes, the taxi driver in Paris asked Marjane where she came from. This time, Marjane did not hesitate to answer back, Iran.
