Good Example Of First Concert Essay Essay

I had really looked forward to the University concert. I was bubbling under with deep excitement. I remember entering the concert hall with my friends. The stage was nicely set, and the air was filled with expectations. I waited with bated to witness the music spectacle that was about to unfold. To think that music bands would be performing right in front of me was more than I had ever imagined. This was made pristine by the fact that I had managed to get one of the front row seats. I couldn’t wait for the performance to start.
The first performance was a tombeau originally written by Leopold Weiss for the death of Baron de Hartig. Leopold is one of the most distinguished lutenist in history mostly recognised for his technical ability as well as his unique style of composing. I was particularly impressed by its musical characteristics. It had dissonant minor seconds, diminished seventh chords, repeated bass notes under shifting chords and a drawn out ending pungently. This way a piece to commemorate the passing away of someone yet it presented and cool and classy way that it did not feel like performer was mourning. The ending was also quite interesting. It ended in a dissonant and somewhat rapid way which could be interpreted symbolically to show the manner of the Baron’s death. That probably it ended rapidly, almost too soon. The Musset that follows had a different feel compared to the tombeau. It is more rugged and had some repeated passages that were absent in the first piece. Still, it makes for a good spectacle especially as it manages to show just how technically diverse Weiss was.
In my opinion, Fernando Sor was a very good guitarist, and that cannot be taken away from him as witnessed in Andante Largo Op. 5 No, 5. However, I think his performances would have been much better if he had incorporated other musical instruments into his works. What was intriguing about the performance was fresh and distinctive harmony? The harmony was skilful and beautifully varied, with bold key changes and rich modulations. This created a melodious tune that could be softly danced to. The highlight of the show for me was the piece originally composed by Hector Villa Lobos. Before the show, I had done a bit of research about him because he is one of my favourite artists. I learnt that his musical style was mainly influenced by his Brazilian roots, but he also borrowed some elements of European classic tradition. What attracted me to his etudes was their uniqueness. It was hard to hear anything similar to Hector’s work. Without saying his compositions are the best ever, I still consider him on of the leading composers of his time.
When the concert ended, I felt it was time and money well spent. The performances were exciting, entertaining and created a good feeling. It was also a great learning experience. The music compositions were varied, and so were the musical instruments. I learnt how various effects can be created by varying the tone, melody and intonations. The concert also gave me the motivation to read about artistes before listening to their performances. This way, the listener is able to fully connect with the performances as different compositions may be set in different contexts.
